Updated EU Guidance on Residue Data Requirements Published – SANTE/2019/12752 Rev.02
The European Commission has released a revised version of its technical guidance document SANTE/2019/12752 (Rev.02), updating important provisions related to residue data requirements for setting maximum residue levels (MRLs). The new version, published on June 23, 2025, provides enhanced clarity on data comparability, Residue trial requirements, and extrapolation practices for plant and animal products.
Key revisions in this update include:
- Updates to Table 3 (recommended extrapolations) and its addendum, Table 4, particularly affecting: Cucurbits with inedible peel, Oilseeds, Sugar plants, (category 09), and Herbal infusions from leaves and herbs.
- Additional clarification on the classification of lettuce types (open vs. closed leaf varieties). Open leaf varieties are defined as varieties having loosely arranged leaves that do not form a compact head. They typically spread out from the stem (e.g. leaf lettuce, oakleaf lettuce, lollo lettuce). While close leaf varieties form a tightly packed head, with leaves growing compactly around the central core (e.g. iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, head lettuce).
These changes are aimed at improving harmonization across Member States and ensuring consistent, science-based decisions on MRLs.
