On Wednesday December 3rd, 2025, Kerona Scientific held its 6th Virtual Dublin Plant Protection Symposium. This annual event serves as a platform to delve into critical issues within the EU and GB/NI landscapes, drawing insights from key stakeholders in the plant protection industry. Among the various speakers, Thérèse Gohin (IBMA) presented on the “Regulatory insights on Biocontrol in the EU” which highlighted the growing importance of biocontrol in European agriculture. With conventional substances declining, resistance rising, and stricter residue demands, biocontrol offers sustainable solutions through diverse modes of action and biodiversity protection.
Innovation is strong as 129 biocontrol products are planned for EU submission by 2028, promising significant farm-level impact. However, regulatory hurdles persist. Mutual Recognition delays (five to six months zonally and up to twelve months interzonally) create financial strain and slow farmer access. Additional challenges include labelling for natural substances, microbial sensitisation, whole-genome sequencing requirements, and defining “biological origin” as new technologies like peptides and RNA-based solutions emerge. IBMA is working with DG SANTE, OECD, and Member States to promote science-based, proportionate regulation. Emerging topics include drone applications, co-formulant regulation, and RNA-based PPPs. The key message is that biocontrol is essential, but current frameworks remain chemical-centric. The revision of Regulation 1107/2009 is a critical opportunity to simplify and harmonise processes tailored to biological products.
