Kerona Scientific was delighted to host Mike Prince from the European Ozone Trade Association Ltd., UK as a speaker at the Dublin Biocide Symposium in March 2024. Mike gave a detailed update on the situation for in-situ generated biocides, like ozone, under the Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 (“the BPR”).
Mike explained that two dossiers were submitted for the support of ozone within the 2016 time frame: EURO3ZON and EUOTA, and that there are some concerns for the assessment of these kind of products. There is uncertainty of what path to follow for assessment due the lack of specific guidelines, as these types of products do not comply with standard chemical evaluation methods (EN standards). Furthermore, the regulators are under -resourced and the bureaucratic process is very slow.
Both Ozone dossiers cover the product types (PT) 2, 4, 5 and 11 and were approved in the spring of 2023. The remaining product types not covered by these PT became illegal in the European Union (EU) after September 2017. The deadline for submission of biocidal product authorisation applications under the BPR is July 1st of 2024.
