On Thursday December 4th, 2025, Kerona Scientific held its 6th Virtual Dublin Plant Protection Symposium. This annual event serves as a platform to delve into critical issues within the EU and GB/NI landscapes, drawing insights from key stakeholders in the plant protection industry. Among the speakers, Prof. Alberto Angioni (University of Cagliari) delivered a presentation entitled “Facing Plant Protection Products Dossier: Overall Situation and Key Concerns.”
Prof. Alberto outlined the Italian system for PPP dossier review, where experts assess identity, phys-chem properties, toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental fate, analytical methods, and efficacy data. The process involves independent reviews, group discussions for consistency, and a commenting period for applicants and Member States. Despite this structure, differing conclusions among Member States remain common. Recurring issues include incomplete reporting, weak read-across, insufficient extraction efficiency data, gaps in environmental fate for multi-crop GAPs, and lack of residue analysis methodologies. Pollinator risk assessment and inaccurate GAP tables also pose challenges, often delaying approvals.
The key takeaway message is that dossier quality is critical. Applicants should understand directives, avoid unsupported conclusions, work with experienced experts, and maintain open communication with authorities. Complex substances require realistic expectations.
