On Thursday December 11th, 2025, Kerona Scientific hosted its 3rd Virtual Dublin FPR Symposium. This annual event provides the fertiliser industry with an opportunity to catch up with what’s happening from a regulatory viewpoint and keep up to date with the latest developments. Amongst the presentations, one of the highlights came from Salvador Bermejo (Technical Director at Fitosoil Laboratorios) who shared an analytical laboratory’s perspective on the “Requirements under the FPR”. As part of the Cotecna Group and with extensive accreditation across agri-food, environmental and industrial testing, Fitosoil plays a key role in providing the analytical backbone needed to demonstrate compliance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009.
Salvador began by outlining how the FPR classification system under Annex I affects real-world testing needs across fertilising products. He emphasised that laboratories must deliver repeatable, auditable and standardised results across a wide variety of parameters, using validated European and international methods. Throughout the presentation, he showcased the breadth of accredited analyses carried out at Fitosoil, ranging from pH, conductivity and dry matter to more complex determinations such as nitrogen speciation, heavy metals, phosphonates and perchlorate, along with advanced techniques, including ion chromatography, ICP-OES, HPLC and LC-MS/MS that ensure precision and reliability in line with the stringent demands of the Regulation.
Another key takeaway from the presentation was the critical role of accreditation (ISO 17025) in ensuring confidence in reported data. Fitosoil holds multiple ENAC accreditations and is currently the only laboratory in Spain accredited specifically for physical-chemical testing of EC fertilisers. This level of quality assurance, combined with specialist microbiological testing capability for organisms such as Salmonella and E. coli, positions the laboratory as a strategic partner for companies navigating FPR compliance.
Overall, Salvador’s presentation reinforced how robust, standard-driven analytical support is central to achieving and demonstrating conformity under the FPR. As regulatory expectations continue to evolve, laboratories like Fitosoil will remain essential in helping the industry deliver compliant, high-quality products to the European market.
